What to expect

Individual therapy is the crux of both Dialectical Behavior Therapy and Cognitive Behavior Therapy, and their research support comes from studies conducted on treatment provision on a weekly basis. As such, weekly individual therapy is strongly recommended for all new patients. As treatment progresses, sessions may be tapered off as clinically appropriate. Intake: During our initial appointment, there will be some paperwork to fill out prior to beginning our intake. The intake appointment will last approximately 60-75 minutes, during which time an unstructured clinical interview will be conducted to assess current problem areas and charting an initial course for treatment. This is also a time for you to determine whether you feel comfortable in treatment and ask any questions you might have about the treatment process. Cost: $200/session. Insurance can be filed if requested.

Individual Therapy: As described above, individual therapy typically occurs on a once-weekly basis with sessions lasting about 50 minutes. Depending on the particular issues you're working on, we will set our agenda for the session. Homework is ordinarily assigned at the end of each session in order to help reinforce the concepts discussed during the meeting. Cost: $160/session. As above, insurance can be filed if requested.

Coaching Calls: Part of the services any comprehensive DBT program needs to offer is referred to as "coaching calls." Coaching calls are a way for clients to generalize the skills learned in group and individual therapy to their own environment rather than becoming skilled only in the therapy room. Coaching calls are not therapy sessions on the phone, but specific conversations directed at changing problem behaviors and breaking old, maladaptive patterns of behavior. Coaching consists of discussing results-oriented behavior and ways to prevent a situation from worsening. While not all clients in DBT need or utilize this aspect of treatment, make sure that any DBT program you begin offers it as a possibility for your treatment. Cost: priceless (or, $0). Coaching calls are part of your treatment and are included at no charge, provided they are not abused.

Group: Currently, we are running a group for University-aged students (dbt-u.com).
